''Gavriil Popov completed the score of his Fifth Symphony, Op. 77, in 1956. It was first performed by the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR under the direction of Abram Stasevich in Moscow on March 18, 1960.''--verso of the TP. Popov was friendly and worked with Vsevolod Meyerhold on thatrical projects. He composed music for almost forty films including the Vasiliev brother's Chapayev and Eisenstein's Bezhin Meadow. Popov was among the group including Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian, Vissarion Shebalin, and Nikolai Miaskovsky who were censured by Zhdanov in 1948.
