Everywhere else the branches swept well down across the line where stones used to make a wall, but for a space there was nothing but darkness--a wide, low arch of it such as he could imagine crawling through on his hands and knees. Except that it was cold and dark, and he wondered what animal, hidden in complete shade, lay and looked out of it, waiting for the last light to die. He shivered, and his grandfather seemed to be aware that he did, for he folded his hands with satisfaction and went on.'
