- Pope, Alexander, Mr. Pope's literary correspondence for thirty years;from 1704 to 1734. Being, a collection of letters, which passed between him and several eminent persons .. E. Curll, London, 1735
Contains much that does not relate to Pope Collected and published by E. Curll, bookseller, who was prosecuted for the publication. "It has now been fully proved that the publication ... was promoted by Pope himself, who wanted an excuse to print his letters."--Dic. nat. biog., v. 13, p. 329. cf. also v. 46, p. 119. Several additional volumes were published subsequently. " An interesting early edition of Pope's letters - especially for the controversy generated by the publication itself. Pope implied that Edmund Curll had purloined the letters by illegally obtaining copies from the recipients. The general opinion today is that Pope himself provided his correspondence to Curll but did not want to appear to be doing so since authors had never previously published their letters. Curll had been a notoriously unprincipled publisher and had to appear before the courts several times because of problems with the official censorship of the period. A number of interesting accounts of the relationship between Pope and Curll can be found on Google by entering "POPE CURLL" One of the more curious aspects of these volumes is Curll's use of increasingly acerbic diatribes and self-justifications in his prefaces to each of the succeeding volumes, in answer to the growing controversy. Here Curll exhibits a surprisingly modern sensibility, well out of keeping with anything else in the books, and, in fact, seems to anticipate the Marxism that would appear exactly 200 years later - Groucho's, that is. The set of four volumes have been uniformly rebound in patterned paper-covered boards and leather spines with leather labels printed with gilt. This is an ex-library copy with initial leaves bearing preforated stamps and all edges stamped with the library name." 3 v. in 1. front., ports. 21 cm Dewey:
