- Poe, Edgar Allan; Lowell, James Russell The works of the late Edgar Allan Poe:with notices of his life and genius. J. S. Redfield, New York, 1850
By N. P. Willis, J. R. Lowell, and R. W. Griswold .. I. Tales.--II. Poems and miscellanies 1850, J.S. Redfield, New York. [vi], xx, 486pp, frontis plate, with tissue-guard, and a 4pp catalogue bound in before the rear flyleaf and free-endpaper (paged 1, 9, 6, & [4]); and, [ii], 498pp; bound separately in ORIGINAL gilt-stamped brown cloth. First collected edition of Poe's works, which was quickly reprinted in expanded form, with the addition of The Literati, as Volume Three. Volume One (Tales), is the first issue and contains the first book appearances of a number of Poe's best tales, including The Mask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death, Never Bet the Devil Your Head, Hop-Frog, The Balloon Hoax, Thou Art the Man, Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, The Oblong Box, The Spectacles, Some Words with a Mummy, Mellonta Tauta, The Domain of Arnheim, and others. This collection was published in 1850, the year after Poe's untimely death at age forty. The first volume contains Poe's tales; the second, the poems plus some tales. The third volume (criticism) was published separately in 1850, These volumes also contain biographical sketches of Poe by Willis, Lowell, and Griswold. Griswold, who secretly hated Poe, convinced Poe's family to make him Poe's literary executor and to allow him to edit this first collection of Poe's works. A fourth and final volume (Arthur Gordon Pym and other prose works) was published in 1856. With a memoir by Rufus Wilmot Griswold and notices of his life and genius by N.P. Willis and J.R. 19th Century Schoolbooks
19th Century Schoolbooks"The Nietz Old Textbook Collection is one of several well-known collections of 19th Century schoolbooks in the United States. Among the 16,000 volumes are many titles that are rarely held and have not yet been reproduced in microform collections or reprint editions. The collection is used by Pitt faculty and students as well as visiting scholars from other colleges and universities. The ULS received two U.S. Higher Education Act Title IIC grants (1985-1987) to catalog the original collection."
