- Allston, Washington, Outlines & sketches, S.H. Perkins, Boston, 1850
by Washington Allston. Engraved by J. & S.W. Cheney Engraved Title page with following Half-Title page reading as follows: "The Outlines and Sketches contained in this Volume, are a part of those found in Mr. Allston's Studio, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after his death, in July 1843. They consist in great part of compositions hastily sketched in chalk, and never carried further; among them, however, are a few Outlines in umber, on canvass, which, although more carefully done, should not be considered as finished Outlines, since they were intended merely as a ground work on which to paint. The sizes of the figures in the different compositions, vary, from that of life, to a few inches in length; and where it was necessary to reduce them for engraving, the daguerreotype was used, by which the image was conveyed to the engraver's plates, prepared for that purpose, and there fixed by tracing the line through the silver. Boston, January 1, 1850." Half-title is followed by 18 of Allston's Outlines and Sketches art plates. Engraved by J. &. S. W. Cheney. Large oblong folio, 22 long x 16 tall. This was the first successful endeavor connecting art engraving and photography in book production in the United States. An important technology for printing engraved plates that advanced the methodology of printing. Twenty engravings printed recto only with tissue guards, on eighteen sheets. Engraved by the brothers, John and Seth Wells Cheney who studied in Europe. Seth opened a studio in Boston in 1841, earned well-deserved acclaim and credit for having been practically the first among American artists to effectively work in black and white. Pub. by Mr. Pope 'First edition of a book whose importance is sometimes overlooked because it is so frequently met with; this is a scholar's copy. This selection was edited by Pope as a memorial to his friend, who had died in 1718. Parnell had visited him shortly before his death (in fact, he died on the way home to Ireland), and had requested that Pope publish a selection of his works for him. 'What he gave me to publish, was but a small part of what he left behind him, but it was the best, and I shall not make it worse by enlarging it', Pope wrote to Jervas in 1720; 'I am erecting the best Monument I can'. The collection is prefaced by Pope's poem to Harley, lamenting the death of the first of the Scriblerians: 'Such were the notes thy once-lov'd Poet sung, Till Death untimely stop'd his tuneful Tongue ..' - Pope, Alexander, Of the use of riches ,an epistle to the Right Honourable Allen lord Bathurst. Printed by J. Wright for L. Gilliver, London, 1733
By Mr. Pope "An Essay on Man is one of the best known poems by the poet and satirist Pope. It was widely read on publication, and occasioned a response from Voltaire, La Loi Naturelle of 1756. Pope was very attached to the work, and crushed by some of the negative responses it engendered, in particular its demolition by a Swiss professor, Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until the 1735 publication of his Works did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting: 'If I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'.Foxon, P825, 833, 840, 845; see Hayward, 148." 22 p. 33 cm Dewey:

Renaissance Dante in Print (1472-1629)
THIS EXHIBITION presents Renaissance editions of Dante's Divine Comedy from the John A. Zahm, C.S.C., Dante Collection at the University of Notre Dame, together with selected treasures from The Newberry Library. The Zahm collection ranks among the top Dante collections in North America. Purchased for the most part by Zahm in 1902 from the Italian Dantophile Giulio Acquaticci, the 15th- and 16th- century imprints presented here form the heart of Zahm's collection, which totals nearly 3,000 volumes, including rare editions and critical studies from the Renaissance to the present. The nine incunable editions and nearly complete series of 16th-century imprints featured in this exhibit constitute essential primary sources for both the history of Dante's reception during the Renaissance and the early history of the printed book.
Zamora 80
In 1945 the Zamorano Club published The Zamorano 80: A Selection of Distinguished California Books Made by Members of the Zamorano Club. The criterion for inclusion was that a selection above all should be distinguished, and that rarity and importance would be secondary. Yet, over time, it appears that the eighty books selected are both distinguished and important, and a number of them are definitely rare. The Club's goal was to choose those books considered cornerstones of a serious collection of Californiana. The books listed in The Zamorano 80 for the most part have withstood the test of time.

The English Server
The EServer (founded in 1990 at Carnegie Mellon as the English Server), attempts to provide an alternative niche for quality work, particularly writings in the arts and humanities. Now based at Iowa State University, we offer fifty collections on such diverse topics as art, architecture, race, Internet studies, sexuality, drama, design, multimedia, and current social issues. In addition to short and longer written works, we publish hypertext and streaming audio and video recordings. Our collections grow as increased membership has new works to publish with us, and as we teach new members how to publish works to the Web and to the more than two million readers who visit our site per month. According to Alexa, this makes us the most popular arts and humanities website in the world.
The Rowley Poems by Thomas Chatterton
“Most people know the legend of Thomas Chatterton -- brilliant poet who failed to make a living, starved himself to send expensive presents to his family, and died by his own hand at seventeen -- much better than his poems. Like all legends, it is partial and exaggerated, but was a powerful influence on the Romantic movement and long after. The painting "The Death of Chatterton" by Henry Wallis epitomises this reputation. His fame rests, apart from this almost unbearably romantic life story, on his "Rowley Poems". These he wrote in a sham Middle English dialect, and passed off as the work of Thomas Rowley, a priest of Bristol in the fifteenth century, and some of his friends. The imposture was quickly detected (though some continued to believe in him for many years), but they were published in a collected edition after his death and were popular and much admired by the Romantic poets, especially Wordsworth, Shelley, and Keats, who dedicated "Endymion" to the memory of Thomas Chatterton.”

John Cage
The John Cage Trust was established in 1993 as a not-for-profit institution whose mission is to gather together, organize, preserve, disseminate, and generally further the work of the late American composer, John Cage. Its founding trustees were Merce Cunningham, Artistic Director of the Cunningham Dance Company, Anne d'Harnoncourt, Director of the Philadelphia Museum, and David Vaughan, Archivist of the Cunningham Dance Foundation, all long-time Cage friends and associates. Laura Kuhn, who from 1986 to 1992 worked directly with John Cage, serves as both a founding trustee and ongoing Executive Director. In 2008, Anne d'Harnoncourt was replaced by Margarete Roeder, long-time gallerist to both Cage and Cunningham; in 2009, Merce Cunningham was replaced by Melissa Harris, editor-in-chief of Aperture.
Thumbprints of Ephelia
Thumbprints of Ephelia (Lady Mary Villiers): The End of an Enigma in Restoration Attribution. Text, Image, Sound. With a first ‘Key’ to ‘Female Poems . . . by Ephelia’ (1679). by Maureen E. Mulvihill (Princeton Research Forum, Princeton, N.J.);
Hosted by ReSoundings (Millersville University, Pa.; 2001, with annual updates).
Lady Mary Villiers, when as Mary, Lady Stuart, Duchess of Richmond & Lennox, with her dwarf, Anne Shepherd Gibson. By Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Court Painter for Charles I. London, circa 1636. Mulvihill reads this famous gloves-and-dwarf portrait of Duchess Mary as ingeniously encoded text for the Duchess’s sly method of manuscript transmission.
Quotes
A Hind in Richmond Park
The wind beats unceasingly on the exposed roof with a succession of blasts or waves which vary in length and violence, causing all the loose parts to vibrate into sound. And the sounds are hissing, whispering, whistling, muttering and murmuring, whining, wailing, howling, shrieking—all the inarticulate sounds by man and beast in states of intense excitement, grief, terror, rage, and what not. And as they sink and swell and are prolonged or shattered into convulsive sobs and moans, and overlap and interweave, acute and shrill and piercing, and deep and low, all together forming a sort of harmony, it seems to express the whole ancient dreadful tragedy of man on earth.W. H. Hudson
