- Pope, Alexander, The rape of the lock :an heroi-comical poem : in five canto's Printed for Bernard Lintott ..., London : 1714
written by Mr. Pope " First complete edition and first separate publication of Pope's mock-heroic masterpiece; the 1st edition to contain all five cantos of the poem. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and five plates, as well as a later portrait of Arabella Fermor Inserted opposite the dedication. Pope was initially inspired to compose The Rape of the Lock in order to resolve a quarrel that arose between the Fermor and Petre families after Robert lord Petre snipped a lock of Arabella Fermor's hair. Hoping to ease the animosity between the two families through playful humor, Pope, with Arabella Fermor's permission, first published The Rape of the Lock in two cantos in Lintott's "Miscellaneous Poems and Translations" in 1712. Pope's genius, however, is fully displayed in the five-canto version of the poem in which he expands the sketch to include divine machinery, albeit on the miniature scale of sylphs and gnomes. "One of Pope's most brilliant performances, it has also been one of his most popular" (DFrabble, 810). Rothschils170." 48 p. ; 19 cm Dewey:

The Cambridge History of English and American Literature: An Encyclopedia in Eighteen Volumes
"Considered the most important work of literary history and criticism ever published, the Cambridge History contains over 303 chapters and 11,000 pages, with essay topics ranging from poetry, fiction, drama and essays to history, theology and political writing. The set encompasses a wide selection of writing on orators, humorists, poets, newspaper columnists, religious leaders, economists, Native Americans, song writers, and even non-English writing, such as Yiddish and Creole."
Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791)
“Throughout his political career Hopkinson wrote poetry and satire on the politically derisive issues of the day. He penned a popular and humorous work on the 1787 Constitutional Convention. He was also an accomplished harpsichordist and composer. His work "My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free," set to the words of Thomas Parnell's "Love and Innocence," is the first extant secular song by a native American composer.”
